OLAF VISITS OXFORD
...John, Mr. Priestley's son, invited me to Oxford for a week-end. He is an undergraduate there. He loves Oxford and knows everything about it. He met me at the station and took me to the "guest (гость) room" at his college where I stayed during my visit. Then we went to his room. On the wall just near the door of his room I could read the number of his room and his name "47 J. Priestley". He has a big study with a desk, bookcase (with lots of books in it), armchairs, reading-lamp, and some pleasant drawings of Oxford on the walls. It looked very comfortable, I must say. He has also a bedroom and a little kitchen where he can make tea or coffee if he has friends in his room.
So he showed me his room where we had a cup of coffee and then we went to see Oxford. Almost all the students were on vacation, but I saw a few of them about. They were wearing black gowns and caps. Some of the gowns looked very old. John said that first-year students tried to get old gowns so that the people could think that they were fourth- or even fifth-year students. Without a gown a student is not allowed to come to his tutor, to have dinner in the college dining-hall or attend a lecture. One student that passed us was wearing a black suit and a white bow-tie under his gown. John said that they had to wear that dress when they were taking an examination. So that unhappy-looking student was going to or from the examination room.
